Characteristics of spring barley varieties for organic farming Organic Eprints
Østergård, Hanne.
Modern spring barley varieties have been developed with the aim of combining high productivity and standardised product quality under high-input conditions using pesticides for control of weeds, diseases and insects as well as heavy application of nutrient-rich and water-soluble inorganic fertilizers. In the organic growing system, biotic and abiotic stresses have to be overcome by growing the appropriate varieties and by practicing good farm management. The important spring barley traits to be considered in organic farming are related to the inherited viability and adaptation of plants to survive biotic and abiotic stresses and includes competitive ability (morphology, weed tolerance, growth rate, allelopathy), disease resistance (morphology, specific and...

Effects of inter-varietal diversity, biotic stresses and environmental productivity on grain yield of spring barley variety mixtures Organic Eprints
Kiær, Lars P.; Skovgaard, Ib M.; Østergård, Hanne.
Varietal seed mixtures tend to increase and stabilize crop yields, yet their application is sparse. Large-scale cultivation of variety mixtures may require a better understanding of how inter-varietal interactions and their interaction with the environment may influence the grain yield of variety mixtures relative to their component varieties. For this purpose, six variety mixtures of spring barley and 14 component varieties were grown in each of 17 trial environments. A total of 28 observed and a priori plant characteristics, including grain yield, disease severity and weed competitiveness, were derived for each component variety in each trial. The relationship between inter-varietal diversity of each characteristic and the mixing effect on grain yield...

Efficiency of incomplete split-plot designs – a compromise between traditional split-plot designs and randomised complete block design Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Kristian; Bigongiali, Federica; Østergård, Hanne.
The paper shows, how incomplete split-plot designs can be constructed from -designs and how they can be analysed. The incomplete split-plot design can be regarded as both a practical and statistical compromise between traditional split-plot design and randomised complete block design. The efficiency of the design is compared to traditional split-plot design and randomised complete block design using data from 5 trials carried out using incomplete split-plot designs in Denmark through 2004-2007. The comparisons showed that the incomplete split-plot design were superior to traditional split-plot design in most cases – and in all cases when comparing differences among treatments in the whole-plot factor. The incomplete split-plot design was in many cases...

Energy and emergy evaluation of potentials for energy self-sufficiency in Danish organic dairy farms by production of biogas and bioethanol Organic Eprints
Markussen, Mads Ville; Østergård, Hanne; Oleskowicz-Popiel, Piotr; Schmidt, Jens Ejby; Pugesgaard, Siri.
One obvious way to enhance agricultural resilience is for farms to increase self-sufficiency with necessities such as fuel, fodder and fertilizer. Our research seeks to uncover these potentials for Danish organic dairy farming. The setting is a theoretical model of a farm-cooperation of 10 farms of 100 ha each producing only milk and animals for slaughtering and being self-sufficient with fodder and fertilizer. The question is if they can be self-sufficient with energy by means of shared biogas and/ or bioethanol production facilities. The method is mapping of energy, emergy (embodied energy measured in solar energy joules) and mass flows in different scenarios, that are based on empirical data from Danish dairy farms concerning mix of crops, crop yields,...

Genetic potential for grain yield in spring barley varieties and variety mixtures in variable organic environments Organic Eprints
Østergård, Hanne; Kristensen, Kristian; Hovmøller, Mogens; Willas, Jakob.
For organic crop production, well-characterised varieties increase the possibilities for controlling diseases and weeds and compensating for deficits in nutrients. Variation in grain yield was studied in about 150 spring barley varieties and variety mixtures and 20 combinations of location, growing system and year. Choice of variety was found to be as important a factor for grain yield as other factors in the management. Some variety mixtures out yielded even the best variety in the mixture, when this was grown in pure stand. Finally, a concept for organic variety testing of spring barley was developed. This Danish project is part of a European COST Network on sustainable low-input cereal production (SUSVAR) which coordinates studies in different countries...

Grain yield increase in cereal variety mixtures: A meta-analysis of field trials Organic Eprints
Kiær, Lars P.; Skovgaard, Ib; Østergård, Hanne.
Plant ecology theory predicts that growing seed mixtures of varieties (variety mixtures) may increase grain yields compared to the average of component varieties in pure stands. Published results from field trials of cereal variety mixtures demonstrate, however, both positive and negative effects on grain yield. To investigate the prevalence and preconditions for positive mixing effects, reported grain yields of variety mixtures and pure variety stands were obtained from previously published variety trials, converted into relative mixing effects and combined using meta-analysis. Furthermore, available information on varieties, mixtures and growing conditions was used as independent variables in a series of meta-regressions. Twenty-six published studies,...

Meta-analysis is a powerful tool to summarize variety mixture effects - exemplified by grain yield and weed suppression of spring barley Organic Eprints
Kiær, Lars; Skovgaard, Ib; Østergård, Hanne.
In a new project, we aim to increase the general understanding of the power of meta-analysis to combine existing experimental results on variety mixtures. In this way, explanatory power can be increased compared to separate analyses and overall measures and relationships may be revealed. We will thus pursue to uncover a number of critical issues, including the relative importance of various traits and trait combinations on mixing success. To demonstrate the methods of meta-analysis applicable for variety mixture data, we considered a data set consisting of grain yield and weed ground cover assessments in 16 field trials of six 3-component variety mixtures and their components (part of the Danish BAR-OF field trials). The effects of mixing were analysed...

Multiple diseases, host resistance and the role of variety mixtures for disease control in organically grown spring barley Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, Hans; Vollmer, Jeanette H.; Hovmøller, Mogens S.; Munk, Lisa; Østergård, Hanne.
The presence of more than one disease at the same time is common in farmers’ fields. The use of disease resistant varieties is one of the most important disease management components in organic farming. While many modern spring barley cultivars possessing good resistance to individual diseases are available today, cultivars resistant to multiple diseases are still scarce because breeding for multiple disease resistance is a difficult and lengthy task. Mixing cultivars possessing high levels of resistance to individual diseases may be a good option to control multiple diseases in ecological farming. Research is underway in Denmark in which the effects of resistance properties of spring barley varieties on the development of two important foliar diseases,...

Net blotch severity is best assessed at early grain filling with respect to its effect on grain weight of spring barley Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, Hans O.; Vollmer, Jeanette H.; Østergård, Hanne; Munk, Lisa.
Appropriate disease assessment methods and parameters reflecting whole-season disease severity levels in field plots remain important issues in studies related to plant disease epidemiology, disease resistance of crop cultivars, and disease-induced yield losses. Such methods and parameters should be yield-related to ensure relevance. Net blotch severity was determined over time in inoculated and non-inoculated field plots of three spring barley varieties by whole plot assessments and by assessments of individual leaves of single main tillers. Disease severity measures such as the area-under-disease-progress-curve, mean and maximum severity as well as severity levels at specific growth stages (GS) were derived from the data. Their relation to thousand grain...

RESOURCE USE IN A LOW-INPUT ORGANIC VEGETABLE FOOD SUPPLY SYSTEM IN UK - A CASE STUDY Organic Eprints
Østergård, Hanne; Markussen, Mads Ville; Kullak, Michal; Nemecek, Thomas; Smith, Laurence.
Use of local renewable resources in a low-input organic vegetable food supply system in UK is evaluated against the use of imported resources in the same system. Despite much focus by the farmer on low-input, the production and distribution system is only supported by 13% local renewable resources based on an emergy assessment. Future sustainability of such systems are discussed.
